ENTITY remembers inspirational woman Tina Tuner on her 77th birthday.

In honor of Tina Turner’s 77th birthday, here’s what makes this legendary singer simply the best.

NAME: Tina Turner

LIFETIME: November 26, 1939 – Present

WHAT SHE IS KNOWN FOR: One of the great soul singers of all time and a legendary live performer, she first became famous as the on and off stage partner of Ike Turner but enjoyed her greatest success after leaving that tumultuous relationship and going solo, scoring a string of huge hits including “Private Dancer,” “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “The Best,” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero.” Oprah Winfrey said this of Tina at the 2003 Kennedy Center Honors, “We don’t need another hero. We need more heroines like you, Tina. You make me proud to spell my name w-o-m-a-n.”

WHY WE LOVE HER: Hers is an amazing story of resilience with hard work and big talent winning through in the end. Tina had an unhappy childhood during which she was abandoned by her parents. She was in an abusive marriage, much of it documented in the film based on her life, “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” But after finding the courage to make it through the tough times and strike out on her own, she eventually achieves global stardom as a solo performer, selling 180 million records. She did it all with great style and remains so stylish that at the age of 73 she became the oldest person ever to feature on the cover of Vogue.
