As leader of the UK for more than a decade, Margaret Thatcher is one of the most polarizing characters in politics. During her time in office from 1979-1990, she changed how women are perceived in the political sphere. In order to celebrate her powerful influence, take a look at these five amazing Margaret Thatcher quotes.
“In politics, if you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman”
The filibuster is a tactic used in the Senate to prevent a bill from being brought to a vote. You have to talk non-stop and remain standing the entire time. One of the most famous filabusters is by Strom Thurmond, who filibustered for over 24 hours. And people say women talk a lot! In fact, the top 10 longest filibusters in U.S. history have all been by men, from both parties.
“People think that at the top there isn’t much room. They tend to think of it as an Everest. My message is that there is tons of room at the top.”
Powerful women do not have to be a rarity. It’s an election year not only for President, but for the majority seats in Congress. There’s plenty of room for women in politics.
“I’ve got a woman’s ability to stick to a job and get on with it when everyone else walks off and leaves it.”
Well, considering that there was a winter day in Washington DC, completely unplanned, in which every single male Senator, floor manager, page and staff member didn’t feel like going to work, with only women – from both parties – showing up to work, she’s not wrong about a woman’s determination to get the job done.
“You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it.”
As a woman, there is always another naysayer that you will have to convince of your abilities. Women in politics have to face these doubters on a daily basis. There is a link between women and politics, and this link is competence. Don’t take our word for it; take Margaret Thatcher’s.
“One of the things being in politics has taught me is that men are not a reasoned or reasonable sex.”
Just look at the gridlock in Congress today; only three years ago the government shut down because reason and compromise could not prevail. Women make up less than 20 percent of Congress, with men making up the majority. Maybe it’s time to flip that number in the next Senate and House election this November.
