In 2007, Steve Jobs created the iPhone. Ever since then, tech enthusiasts have struggled with one question: “Why does my phone die so fast?” With our growing dependencies on our phones, it makes sense that the battery would die so quickly.
But there is a way around the system. You don’t need to carry your charger with you everywhere. Instead, consider these hacks to help keep your battery from dying at inconvenient times.
Unless you’re constantly outside, there’s no reason why your brightness should be all the way up. When your screen is at its brightest, it can quickly drain the power. If you want to stay in control of how much charge you’re using, consider turning off auto brightness and adjust.
On the iPhone, next to the camera lens, there is a sensor that is reading how much light is in the room. When there is a lot of light in the room, the senor will automatically brighten the screen. When you flip your screen over, the sensor reads only darkness and so notifications won’t appear, thus using less power.
When you leave one app and open another, your iPhone keeps refreshing the app until you return to it. It takes a lot of battery for your phone to keep refreshing background apps. To prevent this, go to General Settings > Background App Refresh and switch it off.

Your photo stream automatically uploads your most recent photos so they can be sent to your other devices. However, it takes a lot of power to send pictures to your iPad and Mac. To turn off automatic photo stream uploads, go to Settings > Photos & Camera > My Photo Stream.
Automatic app updates is a setting for the App Store that automatically updates apps. This can use a lot of data (depending on how many apps need to be updated at any given time) but can also use a lot of power at very inconvenient times. Turn off this option and only update apps when you choose.
Unless you’re using a GPS app, a Bluetooth device or Wi-Fi, turn off all these settings to extend your battery life. Most people don’t notice they’re using these services unnecessarily.
This is a function that uses battery unnecessarily. There is no real need to turn on movement animations unless you get disorientated fairly easily. Otherwise go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion.

The benefit of having vibrations on is that you can feel your phone ringing even when you can’t hear it. The downside is that you also lose more battery as your phone has to shake several times to get your attention. If you have a custom vibration speed then that might be worse. Go to Settings > Sounds > Vibrate On.
If any of this is still not doing it for you, you can always turn your phone on Low Power Mode. A study by Wired found that this setting allows your phone to function using 30 percent less power. Go to Settings > Battery >Low Power Mode.
The high resolution on your phone comes at a price. If you want to save some battery, turn on Grayscale. Turn that switch on and your screen will instantly become black and white. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Grayscale On.
When you’re in airplane mode, you no longer have access to cell service and Wi-Fi. If you have no other option, this would be the most effective method of saving battery life.
